Ely, Cambridgeshire

Ely is the third smallest city in England, with its own cathedral and a population of only 15,000. Despite its size, the city continues to grow and is the primary retail and service centre for its district.

Ely is 14 miles north-northeast of Cambridge, and is twinned with Ribe in Denmark. The towns have just celebrated 50 years of this link in 2006, which has been commemorated with a tapestry.

Third Smallest City

As mentioned above, Ely is the third smallest city in England. The only two smaller cities are Wells in Somerset, and the City of London. In the United Kingdom as a whole, Ely is sixth smallest behind St David's, Armagh and Bangor.

Ely is counted as a city due to it being the seat of a diocese. The city status was confirmed in the Royal Charter in 1974.

Shopping and Markets

There are a number of businesses in the city centre, including many chain stores as well as specialist shops. Markets are held on Thursday and Saturday, and a Farmers' market is held every third Saturday.
